Knowing Sam Cook-Parrott, it’s hard to imagine he wrote these songs. He’s 20-years-old and seems like a fun loving naïve kid who is more into reading Watchmen than Kierkegaard. Maybe I’m wrong. Somehow he writes songs about emotions that took me 30-years to fully understand. Maybe that has something to do with growing up with a record collector father and hearing songs about love, or lack there of, before he could walk.

Sam made this album on an 8-track tape recorder in his apartment. The inspiration was a show he booked at the DAAC for Ypsilanti garage rock band Chit Chat. He was excited about the concert and felt that a tape release would get his friends to come to see this new band he loves. That passion for music comes through on Nothin’ In Your Eyes.

When I first met Kyle Colter, I was in a cramped basement while the band he was in at the time was having practice. There were six members but Kyle stuck out because he was playing a Theremin, trombone, and bells. Pistolbrides was his solo recording project at the time.

I left Grand Rapids for several years. When I came back, Pistolbrides was a full band. I was super impressed with sound. Everyone involved added a new dimension. I asked to put out a tape of the early demo recordings. I found that I didn’t need to do that because they had been in the studio for several months recording the Witchcraft E.P.

This album has a 90’s college radio influence with a serving of psyche and surf on the side. There sound is still evolving and taking shape. Witchcraft captured a band that at the time can go into any direction. I’m jazzed to see what they do next.
